The Taunton Planning Board is a seven member board elected at large every
two years in a city wide election. The board is charged with administering
the subdivision control rules and regulations of the City of Taunton
enacted in accordance with MGL Ch 41 sections 81A-81J. The board is also
required to comply with the regulations established in MGL Ch40A and the
City of Taunton Zoning Ordinance.
The Board overseas the creation of all subdivisions of land within the
Cities limits. This includes residential subdivisions on new streets, the
division of parcels on existing streets and commercial and industrial
developments in which new streets or lotlines are created.
Each project that comes before the board has five goals to meet. These
are; 1) To further the orderly and appropriate use of land in the City; 2)
To assure sites are suitable for building purposes and human habitation;
3) To coordinate existing streets with proposed streets, parks, or other
features of the City; 4) To assure the provision of uniform streets and
ways throughout the City; 5) To assure the provision of required
improvements at standards acceptable to the City.
The board also advises the Municipal Council on all developments or land
use policy decisions that fall under Council jurisdiction. These include
