Senior Tax Exemption

(GL Chapter 59, Section 5, Clause 41C)

As a resident of Taunton, you may qualify for a tax exemption if you are 70 years of age or older. An exemption releases an individual from having to pay a portion of their property tax. The exemption amount is $1,000. Your third and fourth quarter bills (due February 1 and May 1) are reduced by $500 each. Applications must be filed every year by April 1st.

Eligibility Requirements

Fiscal year 2024 (July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024):

  • Must be 70 years old before July 1, 2023
  • If married, have less than $58,109 in assets (does not include home) and less than $37,638 in annual income.
  • If single, have less than $54,236 in assets (does not include home) and less than $30,899 in annual income.
  • You must have been an owner of the property or other real property in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for at least 5 years.
  • You must have had a Massachusetts domicile for at least 10 years.

Applicants should submit the following applicable documents:

  • Birth Certificate (first-time applicants only).
  • Statement(s) from Social Security and/or pension(s) showing income for calendar year 2023.
  • Bank Statements as of July 1, 2023 (savings and checking accounts, certificates of deposit, IRA, stocks, bonds, etc).
  • 2022 Federal Tax Return (1040).
  • Rental Income.
