Road Construction & Utility Work

There are a number of ongoing projects happening throughout the City.  Many of the current improvements are critical to Taunton's aging infrastructure and are a sign of progression.  The information on this page is meant to help residents and visitors carry out daily activities and avoid traffic during times of high construction and road work.  If you have any questions pertaining to the projects taking place, please call the Department of Public Works at 508-821-1431.  Please use caution as the Department of Public Works will be patching potholes when weather allows.  To report a public works issue, check out the City's See Click Fix Application.

MA DOT / State Jurisdiction

Rt. 44 (Dean St./Rt. 104 - Arlington St.)  - MA DOT Contractors will begin Rt.  44 Corridor Improvements on Monday, May 15, 2023.  Work on this project consists of roadway improvements along Rt. 44  just east of Arlington Street to just west of the Rt 104 intersection.  Included will be intersection improvements and the replacement of the existing traffic signals at Longmeadow Rd. and Gordon Owen Parkway, reconstruction of sidewalks, drainage improvements, and sewer main lining.  Work is tentatively scheduled from 7A - 3:30P and is expected to continue until September 2026.  Invasive plant management work begins Monday, June 5, 2023 with work starting from Rt. 104 into Downtown.  Tree trimming and roadside brush clearing will start the following week.  More details will follow, but commuters should anticipate impacted travel as the project moves forward.  For more information, please visit, https://hwy.massdot.state.ma.us/projectinfo/projectinfo.asp?num=606024&fbclid=IwAR1byv2g4RtjmN0enRNNHl3Lxjq3_xNEL7GB5OoIXG00HwDT68URdCy7nio or call the MA DOT District 5 office at 857-368-5000.

Rt. 138 Broadway (Leonard Ct. - Purchase St.) - MA DOT Contractors will continue pavement marking installation along Broadway from Leonard St. to Purchase St.

Rt. 140/ Rt. 24 (bridge replacement) - MA DOT Contractors will have on-going bridge replacement, signal and wall structure work at Rt. 24 exit 12 Rt. 140 intersection. Starting Friday night, September 23, 2022 MA DOT will begin Stage 1B work which includes full depth construction and widening along Rt. 24 northbound, widening of Rt. 140 northbound, and construction of new ramps and structural walls. Work for this project may vary depending on the type of work being done and will be in shifts from 7A - 3:30P and 8P - 5A. There will be signage and police details on site to aid traffic flow. This project is expected to be on-going until completion anticipated for June 2027. Rt. 140 - MBTA Contractors will continue work in the shoulder and have lane closure for utility installation and traffic signal modifications on Rt. 140 (County Street).  Weather permitting, work will be happening from Taunton Depot Dr. to the southbound side at the entrance of Industrial Drive from 7A - 3:30P.  To report a roadway/construction issue related to the Rt. 140 work please call the MBTA at 423-375-4086.
