Overview

The License Commission is comprised of a three member Board of civilians appointed by the Mayor, which consists of a Chairman and two Commissioners. Two detectives from the police department's licensing division assist the Commission as police liaisons. The License Commission operates in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 138 and 140, and the Rules and Regulations of the Alcohol Beverages Control Commission, as well as the City of Taunton Ordinances and the Rules and Regulations of the City of Taunton License Commission. The Board of License Commissioners is responsible for the granting of licenses and enforcing rules, regulations, local ordinances, and state laws pertaining to the licenses under their jurisdiction. Among the type of licenses this Board oversees are common victuallers licenses, all alcohol and beer and wine pouring licenses (Section 12 licenses), all alcohol and beer and wine package store licenses (Section 15 licenses), one day special alcohol permits, lodging house licenses, amusement device licenses and entertainment licenses. It is the Board's obligation to serve the public efficiently and to consider the impact of its approval in the granting of new or the renewal of existing licenses, and the impact said license will have in the community, as well as the overall best interest of the citizens of the City of Taunton.
